How to install and setup Google Tag Manager in WordPress

  • to deploy Google analytics using universal analytics tag;

  • to add the third party conversion pixels;

  • to improve your site speed by firing tags asynchronously;

  • to install marketing tools to their website etc.

Here are the basic steps you need to perform to get Google Tag Manager to work:

Step 1. Set up a Google Tag Manager account

  1. Navigate to Google Tag Manager website and sign up via Google account you used with Google Analytics:

  1. Once you complete Tag manager installation steps, you will see a pop-up window with the container code snippets:

Step 2. Add Google Tag Manager Code in WordPress

  1. In order to add tag tracking code to your website, you need to install a plugin called Insert Headers and Footers (from your dashboard open Plugins> Add New > Search for the plugin in search filter> install and activate plugin):

  1. When the plugin is activated you need to navigate to Settings > Insert Headers and Footers and add the code from the pop-up window you got on the account installation of Tag Manager account:

Step 3. Create a Google Analytics Tag

  1. From your Tag manager account click on create a new tag:

  1. Set an appropriate name for your tag and select Universal Analytics from the list:

  1. From Google Analytics Settings drop-down you need to input tracking ID, which you can locate on your Analytics account settings page.

  1. Once you save new tag, it appears under the list of your tags on Tag manager account page:

  1. When you’ve finished creating and saving your tag, do not forget to publish the tags, otherwise, it won’t work:

Your Google Tag Manager is now set up and will now start collecting your website’s traffic data.
